Library of America mourns the passing of Robert Silvers, an unsurpassed editor who helped define and sustain the literary and intellectual culture of New York and America for so many years. With his co-editor Barbara Epstein until her death in 2006 and by himself thereafter, he made The New York Review of Books an indispensable institution. The Review’s early attention to Library of America’s publications, in articles by writers such as Harold Bloom, Gore Vidal, and Elizabeth Hardwick, were crucial in encouraging initial recognition of the significance of our undertaking. In subsequent years the quality of that attention was unabated and was an ongoing source of encouragement, since the Review was so evidently central to the vital debates and conversations of our era. The standards and values upheld by Robert Silvers as editor will continue to be touchstones.
